  1. 21. Climate Change in the Peruvian Andes : A Case Study of Adverse Socioeconomic Impacts on Small-Scale Farmers in the Quillcay River Basin

    University essay from Stockholms universitet/Institutionen för ekonomisk historia och internationella relationer

    Author : Anna Heikkinen; [2016]
    Keywords : Peru; climate change; hydrology; small-scale farming; vulnerability; resilience;

    Abstract : Climate anomalies have been observed in the tropical Andes in Peru resulting in hydrological changes that consequently threaten livelihoods and daily survival of the lowland residents. In this study, adverse socioeconomic impacts on small-scale farmers in the Quillcay River basin due to variation in precipitation patterns and enhanced glacier retreat are examined through a case study approach. 2. 22. Regional and Local Factors Influencing the Mass Balance of the Scandinavian Glaciers.

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för geovetenskaper

    Author : Höglin David; [2016]
    Keywords : Glacier; climate; mass balance; PCA.; Glaciär; klimat; massbalans; PCA.;

    Abstract : According to climatic models there will be an increase in the amount of greenhouse gases which results in a warming of the earth where the change will be most prominent in the high latitudes. Glaciers mass balance is a good climate change indicator as the response is fast when climate is changing. READ MORE

  3. 23. Icelandic Glacial Ice Volume Changes and its Contribution to Sea Level Rise since the Little Ice Age Maximum

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för geovetenskaper

    Author : Stephanie Fish; [2016]
    Keywords : Iceland; Little Ice Age; sea level rise; volume-area scaling; glaciers; climate change; Island; Lilla istiden; havsnivåhöjning; volym-area skalning; glaciärer; klimatförändringar;

    Abstract : Satellite imagery and volume-area scaling are used to asses the glacier area and ice volume of Iceland from the Little Ice Age maximum to present day, obtaining a final result in sea level rise between 1890 - 2015. The Little Ice Age was a time of regional cooling, with glaciers reaching their maximum extent (~1890 for Iceland) with warming and glacier retreat after this period ended. READ MORE

  4. 24. Seasonal Velocities on Nordenskiöldbreen, Svalbard

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för geovetenskaper

    Author : Lena Elisa Ehwald; [2016]
    Keywords : Nordenskiöldbreen; Svalbard; velocity; glaciers; climate change; mass balance; dynamical behaviour of glaciers; Glaciär; Svalbard; Nordenski öldbreen; isflöde; massbalans; klimatuppvärmnin;

    Abstract : Global warming leads to increased precipitation in the Arctic, as warmer air can carry more moisture. The consequence is that many arctic glaciers get steeper slopes over time as increased melt at their lower part causes thinning and increased solid precipitation in their upper regions leads to thickening of the glacier. 5. 25. Investigating methods for identifying paleo surge-type glaciers or highly dynamical ice flows in Trygghamn, west Spitsbergen

    University essay from Stockholms universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi

    Author : Åsa Wallin; [2016]
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Surge-type glaciers exhibit a cyclic behaviour with an ice mass increase in the reservoir area during the inactive, quiescent phase and a rapid transportation of ice during the active, surge phase. In order to interpret the effects of climate change correctly it is important to distinguish between advances of surge-type glaciers and those of ‘normal’ glaciers, caused by climatic fluctuations.
