    Abstract : The aim of this essay is to examine the tension at the heart of the British colonial discourse as it affects the relationship of Travis and Joyce in the chapter "Somewhere in England", in Caryl Phillips's 1993 novel, Crossing the River.     Abstract : We compare investment levels and investment sensitivities of public and private firms along the dimensions of assets, human capital and innovation. For a sample constructed to include a broad universe of Swedish firms, we find that public firms have higher investment levels and investment sensitivities than those that are private, with the differences being statistically and economically significant. I opted for a close reading of several texts and analysed several characters’ relationship to the galactic empire known as the Imperium of Man and found themes of suppression of thought, self-existential crises and wishes for freedom.
