  1. 1. Gravitational Collapse of a Massless Scalar Field in a Theory of Minimally Modified Gravity

    University essay from KTH/Fysik

    Author : Atabak Fathe Jalali; [2024]
    Keywords : Theoretical physics; astrophysics; modified gravity; minimally modified gravity; gravitational collapse; VCDM; scalar collapse; apparent horizon; numerical relativity; Teoretisk fysik; astrofysik; modifierad gravitation; minimalt modifierad gravitation; gravitationskollaps; VCDM; skalär kollaps; uppenbar horisont; numerisk relativitet;

    Abstract : This thesis explores the spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field in a minimally modified gravity theory denoted VCDM (V replaces $\Lambda$ in the $\Lambda$CDM abbreviation), a class of theories propagating the same degrees of freedom as general relativity at the expense of broken 4D diffeomorphism invariance. Numerical evolution of the equations of motion reveals that for small initial scalar profile amplitudes, no black hole forms from the collapse. READ MORE

  2. 2. Spatiotemporal Consciousness in Special Relativity

    University essay from Umeå universitet/Institutionen för idé- och samhällsstudier

    Author : Gustaf Malmberg; [2023]
    Keywords : Consciousness; Phenomenology; Special Relativity; Relativistic Spacetime; Theoretical Physics;

    Abstract : The experience of time passing is a fundamental part of the human experience, but what is the relationship between conscious experiences in time and the relativistic nature of space and time? It is natural to think that our phenomenal experiences are realised by neuralevents in our brains. And it seems plausible that the order of these neural events makes a difference to our phenomenology. READ MORE

  3. 3. The 2+1 Lorentz Group and Its Representations

    University essay from Stockholms universitet/Fysikum

    Author : Klas Sjöstedt; [2020]
    Keywords : The Lorentz group; representation theory; anti-de Sitter space; relativity; Lorentzgruppen; representationsteori; anti-de Sitter-rum; relativitet;

    Abstract : The Lorentz group is a symmetry group on Minkowski space, and as such is central to studying the geometry of this and related spaces. The group therefore shows up also from physical considerations, such as trying to formulate quantum physics in anti-de Sitter space. READ MORE

  4. 4. Closed Timelike Curves in Exact Solutions

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Teoretisk fysik

    Author : Timea Vitos; [2017]
    Keywords : closed timelike curves; time travel; Gödel-type universe; cosmic strings; quantum mechanics and closed timelike curves;

    Abstract : This project aims to study general relativity to the extent to understand the occurrence and behaviors of closed timelike curves (CTCs) in several exact solutions of Einstein’s field equations. The rotating black hole solution, the Gödel universe and the cosmic string solutions are studied in detail to show how CTCs arise in these spacetimes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Microscopic black holes

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Fysiska institutionen

    Author : Jakob Merouani; [2011]
    Keywords : Physics and Astronomy;

    Abstract : In this report I will write about the possibility of black hole creation when introducing the theory of extra spatial dimensions in the visible (3+1) dimensional universe. First I will give a little background on the postulation of black hole formation and talk about what properties black holes have in general, for example the event horizon, singularity and the formation of the black hole is discussed.
