  1. 1. The Effect of Alternative Tungsten Carbide Grain Size Distribution on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties in Cemented Carbides

    University essay from KTH/Materialvetenskap

    Author : Filip Ivarsson; [2022]
    Keywords : Cemented Carbides; WC Grain Size Distribution; Mechanical Properties; Microstructure Analysis; Hårdmetall; WC Kornstorleksfördelning; Mekaniska Egenskaper; Mikrostruktur Analys;

    Abstract : In the constant pursuit of better-performing cemented carbides, recent studies suggest that a combination of better hardness and toughness can be obtained by changing its WC grain size distribution. As the area is still rather unexplored, this  thesis  aims  to  broaden  the  knowledge  and  answer  whether mechanical properties can be changed by changing the WC grain size distribution, in the context of mining drill bit inserts. 2. 2. Binder Migration in Double Pressed Drill Bit Inserts

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Fysiska institutionen; Lunds universitet/Fasta tillståndets fysik

    Author : Axel Bjerke; [2018]
    Keywords : Physics and Astronomy;

    Abstract : It is possible to produce functionally graded cemented carbides on a large scale by double pressing. Being able to predict the binder migration in WC-Co cemented carbides during the sintering is essential to the design of such cemented carbides. The cobalt content is one of the main factors determining the hardness gradient. READ MORE

  3. 3. Design of cemented carbide with Ni-based superalloy binder strengthened with y’-Ni3Al precipitates

    University essay from KTH/Materialvetenskap

    Author : Oscar Edholm; [2018]
    Keywords : Cemented Carbide; Super alloy; Ni-alloy; Ni-Super alloy; Superalloy; Ni3Al; NiAl; Gamma Prime; Gamma; Precipitates; Ni3Al Precipitates; Master Alloy; Liquid Phase Sintering; Cementerad karbid; Hårdmetall; Superlegering; Ni-legering; Ni-Superlegering; Superalloy; Ni3Al; NiAl; Gamma Prim; Gamma; Precipitates; Ni3Al Precipitates; Mästerlegering; Utfällning;

    Abstract : Replacement of cobalt in cemented carbides has gained in attention recently because threats of regulations due to health issues (cancerogenic effect), increased demand from the electric vehicle industry and the questionable extraction from countries like Democratic Republic of Congo. In this report the use of Ni-based binder as an alternative binder for cemented carbides has been explored. READ MORE

  4. 4. Effect of carbon activity on microstructure evolution in WC-Ni cemented carbides

    University essay from KTH/Materialvetenskap

    Author : Olivia Danielsson; [2018]
    Keywords : Cemented carbides; Hard metal; WC-Ni; Tungsten carbide; Nickel binder; Grain coarsening; Grain growth; Carbon activity; Size distribution; EBSD; Electron backscattered diffraction;

    Abstract : The aim of this work was to systematically study how the microstructure evolution is affected by the carbon activity in WC-Ni cemented carbides. Seven WC-9.59at%Ni alloys with different carbon activity were sintered at 1500 °C. READ MORE

  5. 5. WC grain size distribution during sintering of WC-Co cemented carbides

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Materialteknik

    Author : Oscar Bjäreborn; [2016]
    Keywords : hardmetal; cemented carbides; WC; EBSD; grain size distribution; microstructure; coercivity; hardness; toughness; sintering; growth inhibition; Technology and Engineering;

    Abstract : The grain growth of WC in WC-7%Co cemented carbides with Cr-addition was investigated for cemented carbides synthesized from four different raw materials varying in grain size. Cr additions were 4%of the Co binder phase. To investigate the effect of Cr on grain growth two of the raw materials were also synthesized without Cr-additions. READ MORE
